Understanding Bronchiectasis: Causes, Symptoms, and Care
Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition that is often misdiagnosed. Learn how it is identified and managed at One Healthcare, Nagpur.
What is Bronchiectasis?
Bronchiectasis is a chronic condition in which the airways (bronchi) of the lungs are permanently widened, scarred, and thickened. This makes it difficult to clear mucus, leading to recurring lung infections.
Causes
It can result from repeated lung infections (TB, pneumonia), cystic fibrosis, immune system problems, or inhaled foreign bodies. In some cases, the cause is unknown (idiopathic).
Symptoms
Patients typically experience a daily productive cough with large amounts of mucus, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and fatigue. Symptoms tend to worsen during respiratory infections.
Diagnosis at One Healthcare
Dr. Arbat uses High-Resolution CT (HRCT) scanning, spirometry, bronchoscopy, and sputum cultures to accurately diagnose bronchiectasis and determine its cause.
Long-Term Management
While bronchiectasis cannot be cured, it can be managed effectively with airway clearance techniques, targeted antibiotics, pulmonary rehabilitation, and regular follow-up. Early diagnosis and consistent care prevent progression.
